cornucopias (2) - Brass, Horn - late 19th / early 20th century

[ translate ]

A beautiful pair of Horns of Plenty standing on richly decorated uprights. Claw legs, dragons, acanthus etc. The Cornucopia (‘cornu’ is horn and ‘copia’ is stock in Latin) is also known as the Horn of Plenty. This legendary object, which (as the name suggests) offered abundance, originally stems from Greek mythology. According to myth, the Cornucopia is the horn of the goat Amalthea that nursed Zeus on Crete. By way of thanks, Zeus put her in the sky as a constellation and her horn granted the holder of it everything he or she desired. Will be carefully packaged and shipped with registered mail.
