The painting is overall in excellent condition, some restorations were performed before the purchase but blended very well and are only visible with UV lamp. The painting is of great quality as you can see from the body of the saint and the angels. Gold leaf frame measuring 93x120cm The shipping includes insurance, local pickup available. Certificate of provenance will be provided upon request. Original painting: The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence is an oil on canvas painting made by Tiziano in 1558. The original is at the church “I Gesuiti” in Venice. According to normal iconography, it shows the saint being burned on the griddle, in a dramatic scene. An executioner pierces him it with a pitchfork, while another brings more firewood. The chiaroscuro shows a nocturnal atmosphere, the darkness is only interrupted by the light of the flames and torches. Engraving with the same inverted subject: In 1571 Cornelis Cort made a reproduction of the painting, which blends details of paintings from Venice and El Escorial. It is believed that he used a small drawing or model of Titian found in his laboratory. As usual in reproduction prints, the printed engraving shows the image upside down.
