Francis, born in Philadelphia, in the mid 19th century became known as one of the premier artists of the revival of still-life painting. Most of his work is unsigned. Early in his career he was an itinerant portrait painter and silhouettist. He spent approx. 25 years traveling throughout rural Pennsylvania and Delaware. Around 1850, he turned exclusively to still life using techniques of 17th c. still life Dutch painters.
