Bound contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards.[joints worn] First Edition of one of the earliest authoritative works on Labrador. The author, a former British army officer and brother of the celebrated Major John Cartwright, was engaged by a group of British merchants to trade with the Canadian Esquimaux. During the years 1770-86, he made six long fishing and trapping expeditions to Labrador and established posts near Sandwich Bay. Written in a 'plain and manly style' (Rich), his journal provides a detailed account of the fur trade, Indians and Esquimaux, and natural history of Labrador, and contains a glossary of English words peculiar to Canadian life of the period [.Lande 106; Sabin 11150; TPL 586]
