EMELINA

[ translate ]

By Ruben Dario & Eduardo Poirier
In-8º. VIII + 204. Inscribed by Eduardo Poirier. Bound in full blue calf 4 raised bands, blue velvet endpapers, slipcase. Frontispiece resized and restored. One of the most difficult books to find of Ruben Dario, he wrote Emelina encouraged by Eduardo Poirier, who proposed him to participate in the Varela contest, established by the newspaper La Unión de Valparaíso. This contest was closed on August 1, so he had to write it in ten days and without prior preparation. For this reason, perhaps, he did not get any recognition. This novel was recently published in 1887, obtaining a regular reception from the critics. Francisco Contreras, a studious writer of his work, commented in those years: "Written in a career, in ten days, this novel suffers from the deficiencies of improvisation and the lack of expertise of Darío in a genre he should never master. it is arbitrary or null, the talk of conventional characters, the descriptions of London and of Paris, bookish and naive. " In the prologue of the book, Rubén Darío described this novel as a sin of youth: "As for the great weakness of this work, it is the same one that Goncourt points out referring to his beautiful and incomparable primitive EN 18. We have not had the direct vision of the human, but the memories and reminiscences of things seen in the books ". Rubén Darío and Eduardo Poirier dedicated the book to Agustín R. Edwards Mac Clure.
