Folio 13" - 23" tall; 1717 Printed By W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintot & & 1735 Printed By J. Wright for Lawton Gilliver. London, respectively. 1st edition, both volumes. In the folio printings. The first volume of 1717 is in the first issue (without Tonson's name on the imprint). Volumes uniformly rebound in modern grained goat skin backed spines with marbled paper covered boards. Leather title labels to spinal compartments. Prior ownership in manuscript of Elizabeth French to title pages of both volumes. Both half-title pages present, but folding engraved frontis of Pope is missing from Vol I. Vol I conforms to Griffith 82, the smaller paper folio issue without head and tailpieces; the ornament on the title page is basket of flowers above two cherub heads. [32]; 408 pp. First several leaves with a small spot of worming in the top margin. Vol II is the first issue of 1735 conforming to Griffith 370. Folio with title page in red and black; erratic and irregular pagination and signatures in six groups, conforming to the placement of the poems. The "Essay on Man" has a unique title page in full dated 1734. Page placement of the first group - title page and front matter - varies slightly from Griffith. Otherwise signatures and pagination correspond to Griffith 370.
