Biga FERTILITY DOLL Culture Mossi, Burkina Faso First half of the 20th century Drink H. : 32; L. : 3. 5; Thickness: 7. 5 cm Stylized anthropomorphic doll with a long slender neck and a minimalist body sculpted in a linear extension. The shoulders are manifested by a detachment of material, the face is in the shape of a half-moon. Geometric scarifications are incised at the level of the face, on the temples, at the level of the crest in a series of obliques as forming a hair, on the chest in a star pattern and on the lower part. Mothers offered these Biga dolls to young girls as a toy or symbolic accessory for their future marriage or pregnancy. The Biga had to be carefully preserved. Text and photos © FCP CORIDON
