Darío Pérez-Flores (Venezuelan, b. 1936) Mobile No. 18, 2005 Mixed media, acrylic on wood, aluminum, electrical fittings 23-1x2 x 23-1x2 x 2-3x4 inches (59.7 x 59.7 x 7.0 cm) Signed, titled, and dated to reverse PROVENANCE: Mark Hachem: Galerie d'Art Contemporain, New York, 2006. Darío Pérez-Flores is one of several significant Latin American artists who established studios in Paris in the 1970s. Together, they created works that would later be known as the Optical and Kinetic art movements. His sculptures, such as the present example, are composed of vertically aligned kinetic elements, which, when in motion, create an shifting optical effect as the space of light, depth and colors change. Pérez-Flores worked alongside contemporaries Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesús Rafael Soto, and has created a unique body of work that challenge our preconceptions of the possibilities of experience during art viewing.
