\Artist: Scuola Fiamminga (XVIII) , maniera di Rubens
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Hand signed\Dimensions: 107_84_0_cm
This painting was made between the 18th century and the 19th century. It shows a magnificent and elegant classical scene about “The Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite”, made with oil on canvas. It resumes the pictorial style and palette of the great Rubens. Sir Pieter Paul Rubens (Siegen, 28 June 1577 - Antwerp, 30 May 1640) was a master of Flemish painting, and his production can be considered the archetype of “Baroque”. Poseidon married Amphitrite, one of his Nereids at court, daughter of Nereus and Doris, also called by the Romans “Salacia” or “Venilia”. Her name means “the third that surrounds the sea”, because the ancient Greeks thought that the whole world was surrounded by a god-river, Oceanus. After seeing her dancing on the island of Naxos, the god of the sea fell in love with her, but she initially disdained the court of the deity, hiding in the Atlas mountains. Determined to conquer her love, Poseidon decided to send his dolphin and servant to convince her. When he succeeded, the god turned the animal into a constellation out of gratitude: Delphinus. The union of Poseidon and Amphitrite gave life to Triton - which means “babbling” -, Rhodos - from whom the island of Rhodes derives - and Benthesikyme - “the lifter of the deepest waves”. Although Amphitrite had become the queen of the sea, she was not spared suffering because of the frequent infidelities of Poseidon, who had many loves among goddesses, nymphs, and mortal women. Her most bitter rival was Scylla, who exerted a strong fascination on the god. Overwhelmed by jealousy, Amphitrite put magical herbs in Scylla’s bathtub, that turned her into a monstrous being with the appearance of a dog and snakes, and forced her to hide in a cave near the Strait of Messina. The work has been perfectly preserved and features the drawing, the style, and the palette typical of Rubens; after being tested with solvents, it proved to be authentic in all its parts. The painting comes with certificate of authenticity and lawful origin issued by our gallery, with photo as required by the law. The canvas measures 107 x 84 cm, the coeval frame measures 127 x 104 cm. Safe and trackable shipping. The frame is kindly offered as a gift, so we do not accept any claims, nor are we responsible for any damage during transport.
