A Large Ko-Kutani Charger, Edo Period, Early 19th Century
The interior decorated with overglaze gilt and polychrome enamels against a cream ground with two pheasants to the centre, the cavetto revealing two cartouches containing Karako (Chinese boys) and a scholarly gentlemen, the underside green and yellow glazed with a seal-form 'fuku' mark, diameter 18.5 in — 47 cm

Note:
The figures depicted in current lot are Japanese interpretations of classical Chinese themes, most notably the pair of pheasants to the centre, which pays homage to the early Qing dynasty artist Shen Quan (1682-1762). The presence of this design in Ko-Kutani decoration demonstrates the impact of the Chinese painting schools that Shen Quan brought to Japan during his visit to Nagasaki between 1731-1733, and the cross-talk between Japanese and Chinese painting schools throughout the entirety of the Edo period in Japan.

Estimate: $600—800
