PAIR OF SILVER MOUNTED ENGLISH FLINTLOCK PISTOLS

PAIR OF SILVER MOUNTED ENGLISH FLINTLOCK PISTOLS. Comprising two maker marked similar silver-mounted Georgian turn-off pistols. The first by Henry Delany. Being a finely crafted specimen with tapering smooth bore 60 caliber turn off cannon barrel, the breech engraved with foliage and the hammer and surrounding area chased with flourishes. The trigger guard bow engraved with stylized clamshell, the backstrap set with interesting silver heart shaped escutcheon engraved with kneeling man pierced by a sword and the silver inlaid side escutcheon modeled as military trophies and with London hallmark. The buttcap with finely modeled silver grotesque mask exhibiting maker's mark JA likely for Joseph Allen or Jeremiah Ashley. The underside of breech with maker's mark DELANY and London proof marks and the top of breech engraved LONDON. Tight crisp action and smooth clean bore. Overall length 11.8 inches (30 cm). Together with another similar pistol, with tapering grooved bore turn off cannon barrel, the walnut stock carved with clamshell beneath folds on backstrap, the hammer, lock plate, frizzen, top of breach and backstrap engraved with foliage. With ornate steel escutcheon on side and backstrap and the buttcap with finely modeled silver grotesque matching the other pistol and with same maker's marks JA. Good tight crisp action, clean bore. Overall length 13 inches.

Henry Delany, a Huguenot, was admitted to the Gunmakers' Company in 1715 and active in Long Acre until his retirement in 1745. He was noted as a maker of fine breechloading sporting guns and silver mounted pistols.
