Bill Gaines's comics career started when he inherited EC from his father, M.C. Gaines, who died in a powerboat smashup on Lake Placid. Gaines's comics career nearly ended with another fatal boating episode, when Senator Kefauver lambasted him over this mag's violent cover:

"This is the July one. It seems to be a man with a woman in a boat and he is choking her to death here with a crowbar. Is that in good taste?" — Estes Kefauver to Bill Gaines, United States Senate Subcomittee hearing, April 21, 1954.

A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
