1857 (27 May) envelope to London "pr Simla via Marseilles" bearing 1854 6d. dull orange pair with 1/- rose-pink and blue registered stamp tied by "1" barred ovals, "6" rate mark and a fine strike of the first open-type London registered/g.p.o." dated oval code "M" (27.7) (A&H 1493) in red, the reverse with Melbourne despatch oval. Pays double rate packet letter (up to ½oz.) and 1/- registration. 6d. of the postage was credited to France for the premium route via Marseilles). This letter arrived in Alexandra on 12th June but there was no E.& A. or P.& O. vessle available so the British Consul hired the 'Salamander' to carry the mail to Malta. It was 11 days late reaching London
