A Victorian silver pedestal sugar basket, of circular tapering form, with beaded border detail enclosing vertical pierced sides overlaid with ribbon tied swag and pendant motifs and opposing vacant ovals, with a plain blue glass liner and a swing handle with further beading, the whole raised on a similarly decorated spread foot. Hallmarked Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall, London 1880. Height to rim 5" (12.7cm), weight excluding glass 7.03 ozt (218.6 grams).
Condition Report:
- Displaying general surface wear, marks, scratches and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.
- Likely once gilded throughout as traces of gilt remain.
- Some minor surface dints and slight knocks, including to some of the panels.
- Further slight knocks to foot rim.
- Swing handle appears in good working order and is self-supporting when upright.
- Possible engraving removal from the oval panels as there are only traces of gilding around each edge and nothing in the centres.
- Surface rubbing to areas of the decoration causing some slight loss of detail.
- Residues of a sticky label to the underside of foot.
- Blue glass liner with a small chip to the lower body, otherwise appears in good condition.
- Hallmarks located below the rim, these rubbed in parts but all still clearly legible.
