Quimbaya Pottery Seated Figure
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca Complex, Quimbaya culture, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery male slab figure boasting an expressive pose - sitting with both hands grasping at his chest. The neck is indicated via a deep groove as is customary of such Quimbaya figures. Grooves around its feet and upper arms indicate that ornamental bands were once present. The visage is decorated with a pair of lengthy slit-form eyes, an identically shaped mouth opening, a bulbous nose. The perforated septum was traditionally used to attach a gold nose ring. Slab figures like this example were placed as burial offerings, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 3.5" W x 4.5" H (8.9 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: private Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, USA collection, acquired 2020; ex-private North Oaks, Minnesota collection, USA, before 2001
