Japanese Meiji Lacquered Wood Lidded Box w/ Togidashi
East Asia, Japan, Meiji Period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An elegant wooden box of a circular design with a lid that fits flush against the vessel. The whole piece is painted with a black, lacquered ground, and a indiscernible makers mark is painted on the base. The top lid is adorned with two feathers; one painted in silver with red details and the other in gold with red and grey stripes and speckles. This metallic painting technique is known as togidashi maki-e. The design, in this case the two feathers, are painted in lacquer then powdered silver and gold is sprinkled over the wet surface. Once dry, a second layer of lacquer is added to fix the powder in place. The area is then polished to make the design flush with the rest of the surface.
