Property from a European Private Collection
Master of San Jacopo a Mucciana
active in Florence between 1390 and 1420
A portable triptych: The Madonna and Child flanked by saints (central panel); Saint Christopher (left wing); The Crucufixion (right wing)

tempera on panel, gold ground, with a later engaged frame and extensions measuring 3.2 cm. to the lower edge of both wings
central panel: overall dimensions: 62 x 28.5 cm.; 24⅜ x 11¼ in.; painted surface: 40 x 19 cm.; 15¾ x 7½ in.
each wing: overall dimensions: 55 x 14 cm.; 21⅝ x 5½ in.; painted surface: 45 x 10 cm.; 17¾ x 3⅞ in.

Condition Report:
The triptych is in overall fair condition. It is set within a more recent frame, and there are additions along the lower margins of the left and right wings, 2.5 cm. in height. There is a vertical split running down the left-hand side of the reverse of the backing panel of the central section. The original panels are flat and stable, the paint surfaces are slightly dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is visible retouching to the gilding along all the margins, presumably carried out following the panels' insertion into the frame. The blues in the Madonna's robes have degraded and have been retouched. Other small discoloured retouchings are visible scattered throughout all the figures and the foregrounds of each scene. There are also a handful of surface scratches visible under raking light in the lower half of the central panel, as well as two vertical repaired, retouched splits, one starting on the lower margin, just right of centre (3.5 cm. long), and the other a cm. from the right margin (21 cm. long). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of retouching, the older of which is difficult to discern beneath the milky varnish. The aforementioned retouchings are confirmed, however, most notably: in the central panel - around the Madonna's face and in her right hand, in the Child's arms and sides of his face, to the longer of the two splits; in the left-hand panel - to a vertical line in Saint Christopher's stomach (2 cm. long) and in the two lower corners; in the right-hand panel - to Christ's hair, along the outlines of his outstretched arms and the jamb of the Cross, and scattered in the Madonna Annunciate above.
