Long Cassowary bone dagger - Bone, Seeds, Casuari feathers - Asmat - West-Papua (former Irian Jaya)
Magnificent 30 cm long dagger from Asmat people made of bone, adorned in woven textiles with kasuari feathers. Asmat tribes were headhunters, their daggers ( for hunting or tribal war) were often carved from the white human femur or tibia of a vanquished enemy. The dagger is also beautifully decorated with a woven sago fiber sleeve over the knuckle with silver gray coix seeds. Final embellishment is provided by adding a point sharp nail and floating feathers of the cassowary. The black thin feathers of this large ostrich -like bird are appreciated by many Asmat tribes because of the difficulty and danger of hunting the cassowary with its dangerous sharp nails as a weapon.
