A South German wheellock hunting rifle, circa 1650
Octagonal, slightly waisted barrel with smooth bore in 14 mm calibre. Dovetail front sight, rear sight missing. Lock with semi-external wheel, the lockplate engraved with a scene from a bear hunt. Spring-loaded pan cover with release button. Adjustable set trigger. Walnut full stock with rich inlays of finely engraved and blackened bone. Several hunting scenes, on the cheekpiece a jumping stag, on the sideplate and underside of the stock scenes of hounds fighting a stag and bear, respectively. The forend restored in the middle section, one small inlay next to the tang replaced. Patchbox with spring-loaded sliding lid. Original ramrod with engraved bone tip. Length 111 cm.Condition: II -
