with inscription 'W. W. Wood by Chinnery / from W C B[?]' on the stretcher
oil on canvas
97⁄8 x 8in. (25.1 x 20.3cm.)
with a preparatory(?) drawing on transfer paper laid down on paper of the same subject attributed to Chinnery. There are fragments of a sheet by Chinnery including inscriptions in the artist's shorthand on the reverse of the mount.
A printed label on the reverse of the drawing reads: 'W. W. Wood was a good friend of Chinnery and published a book of sketches. He was born in Philadelphia in 1805(?) and probably died in Manila. He was founder and editor of the Canton Register (1827-1828) and the Canton Gazette (1831-1833). He was the son of the famous American actor manager William Burkewood (1779-1861) and his leading lady Juliana Westray. W. W. Wood also worked for Russell & Co. and later rejoined Russell, Sturgis & Co. in Manila.'
