Pair of monkey sculptures - Glazed and gilded terracotta
Pair of monkeys (remarkable size) made of glazed terracotta, white/golden background, Italy - 20th century. Glazed terracotta, white colouring with gilding in details. Two monkeys are depicted in different postures and in the pose of surprise/waiting. Made in the style of the typical 18th-century ‘singerie’, in particular of the Meissen manufacture in the early 1700s. Modelled by hand, on a white background, glazed and decorated with golden flames to highlight the anatomies of the bodies and other details (e. g. tree trunk in the shorter monkey) . The effect is very realistic and of ‘alive’ spontaneity of the two animals’ behaviour. Made in Italy, probably central Italy. Condition: intact, in the paste and gilding. Dimensions: short monkey height 39 cm; tall monkey 45 cm. Overall weight: 8 kg.
