Custom Case with Original Transparencies of Works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude for an Exhibition in Berlin with 15 Different Signed Color Postcards of their International Outdoor Displays

Comprised of:

• The clamshell case housing the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Archive is in itself a work of art. The grey and charcoal streaked covers of the case, 9.5” x 13” x 1.75”, are wrapped in string. Five strings go from the top to bottom of the covers and eight strings from the side edges to the five raised bands on the spine which is signed “Christo” in black in one of the four compartments.

• Original set of 20 Ektachrome transparencies for the September 8 to November 4, 2001, exhibition at Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum titled “Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Early Works, 1958-69.” Each color transparency, 4” x 2.5” image, overall 4.5” x 3.5” (visible) has been matted in black, 8” x 10” with a 4” x 2” identification label affixed, describing the original size of the collage or drawing and materials used, name of photographer and copyright information.

The label on each matted transparency follows this format: “CHRISTO / TWO WRAPPED TREES, PROJECT. / Collage 1969-2000. / 17.8 x 26.7 cm (7 x 10. 1/2”) / Pencil, pastel, crayon, enamel paint and / brown wrapping paper. / Photo: André Grossman. / COPYRIGHT CHRISTO 2000.” Also present are two sheets cut to the actual measurements, one, on heavy stock, notes, in unknown hand, “10½ “ = 26.7 cm / 7” = 17.8 cm. / Size of Originals / Collages and Drawings.” A 16.5” x 16.5” folded penciled drawing, probably drawn and annotated by Christo, shows how each collage or drawing – the “Original Work” – might be displayed, with the notation “Suggestion For Framing the 20 / Original Works.” A two page 8.5” x 11” typed listing of the 20 project titles, headed “Carl Flach,” is present. Art dealer Carl Flach curated Christo/Jeanne-Claude exhibitions.

• Collection of 15 thick color postcards, each 9” x 4.75”, published by Schumacher, Düsseldorf, Germany, fourteen signed “Christo et” “Jeanne-Claude” – one signed “Christo and” “Jeanne-Claude”), each a color photograph of their artwork: “Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin 1971-1995” (2 different), “The Umbrellas, Japan-USA 1984-91” (4 different: 2 blue Japan, 2 yellow California), “The Wall, 13.000 Oil Barrels Installation in the Gasometer Oberhausen, Germany 1998-99” (3 different), “Wrapped Trees – Verhüllte Bäume Fondation Beyeler, Berower Park, Riehen Switzerland 1997-98” (6 different).

• Present is the first page of two page typed letter ostensibly from Christo to Carl Flack in Sweden, dated August 2, 2000, about the Berlin exhibit, with ink notations, possibly by Christo: “We will do the new / Ecktechromes –“ and “Co-owned with Harrison Rivera – Terreaux –”
