Dan People, Liberia: A highly unusual mask in the form of a human face whose mouth has been fashioned as a small megaphone. Carved wood, adorned with brass upholstery tacks, 19th century. The mask has a brown/black patina and appears worn from handling and use. Its purpose is unknown, but may be a piece of regalia used in secret rituals and initiations.
