CONTINENTAL SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY
THE POWER OF BEAUTY: A PAIR OF PAINTINGS DEPICTING SOLDIERS AND LADIES IN FLAGRANTE, PRESENTED IN A FOLDING FRAME, WITH AN 18TH-CENTURY ENGRAVING AFTER A DESIGN BY FILIPPO LAURI (1623-1694)

a pair, both oil on canvas, framed together
etching with engraving, by William Walker, published by John Boydell
each canvas: 37 x 51.3 cm.; 14⅝ x 20⅛ in.
engraving: 37.4 x 46.5 cm.; 14¾ x 18¼ in.
framed: 44.5 x 55.2 cm.; 17½ x 21¾ in.

Condition Report:
Both canvases are lined, the paint surfaces are dirty and the varnishes are discoloured. There are retouched losses visible along the inner margins of both paintings. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the thick varnish, but only a handful of scattered retouchings are visible to the naked eye. The print has been trimmed and is light stained, with other minor defects. It has not been examined from underneath the glazing.

Provenance:
Bought from Marc Rhys, Portobello Road, for 200 Guineas, 15 August 1966 (according to an inscription on the reverse);

Thence by descent in the family of the present owner.
