Congressman William Strong of Pennsylvania and four other Democratic members of Congress subscribe for copies of Thomas H. Bayly’s speech in Congress that criticized the expenditures of the Treasury Department in collecting the revenue. William M. Meredith of Pennsylvania served as the Secretary of the Treasury from March 1849 to July 1850 in the administration of President Zachary Taylor. After Taylor’s death in office, Meredith resigned.

William Strong (1808-1895) was born in Connecticut and graduated from Yale University in 1828. He taught school while studying law, then attended a six-month course at Yale Law School. He gained admission to the bar and began a law practice in Reading, Pennsylvania. In 1846, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives as an anti-slavery Democrat. He served two terms from 1847 to 1851, then returned to the practice of law. He won election to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1857 as a Democrat but soon became a Republican. He resigned from the court in 1868 and resumed a private law practice in Philadelphia. President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Strong to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1870. He resigned from the Court in 1880 and resumed the practice of law.
Thomas H. Bayly (1810-1856) of Virginia served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1844 until his death.
John K. Miller (1819-1863) of Ohio served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1851.
Graham N. Fitch (1809-1892) of Indiana served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1849 to 1853 and in the U.S. Senate from 1857 to 1861.
Jacob Thompson (1810-1885) of Mississippi served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1839 to 1851 and as U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1857 to 1861. During the Civil War, he served as Inspector General of the Confederate States Army. Jefferson Davis asked Thompson to lead a delegation to Canada, where he organized anti-Union activities and was suspected of involvement in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
Charles H. Peaslee (1804-1866) of New Hampshire served as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1853.
