[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $300**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A charming cast bronze dolphin applique with a stylized body, arched tail, and open mouth. Dolphins were a powerful and common motif in Roman artwork. The Romans were in part a maritime empire, and the iconography of the sea included dolphins, who they seem to have believed carried souls to the Fortunate Isles, perhaps because they could pass through the air-breathing terrestrial world and into the watery depths that claimed so many Roman sailors' lives. Size: 2.75" W x 2.2" H (7 cm x 5.6 cm); 2.7" H (6.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private H.G. collection, Rhineland-Palatinate, acquired between 1970 and 1999

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
