FANG female statue We are too often ignorant of the diversity of the pieces and the richness of their particular senses. Thus the BYERI guardian statues of reliquaries and the statues of ancestors have a symbolic and idealized style: child's face, muscular body which express the eternal youth and strength of the ancestor. This statue, BETSI style is quite different: it was made following a disaster in the village. It represents a mature woman who has already lived through the vicissitudes of life, squatting, her hands resting on her knees (as a sign of submission) , her bust straight and dignified, her eyes bright. She invokes the protection of ancestors in misfortune. Subject to many sacrifices and oil anointings, it has a satin patina that oozes at higher temperatures. Erosion in the lower back.
