British, late 18th Century George III tipstaff or tipstave of office, c. 1796. Brass construction with wood handle. Brass ball finial end. The body engraved “3 GR Oxford Ward II, 1796”. 10 1/2" long overall. 232 grams. Tipstaffs or tipstaves pre-dated the establishment of the British national police force and were given to certain public officials (such as bailiffs) as a symbol of their office - and also for use as a club when necessary.
