Splendid silver anklets called Khalkhal that are mainly found from Mauritania to the Saharan borders. The bracelets are moulded and the rectangular plates are finely chiselled and enamelled in black and red. The ends end in large balls ensuring the stability of the jewel on the ankle. The body resumes gadrooned lines. Decoration by coarse granulation in clusters of three spheres. Engraved and enamelled symbols provide protection against the evil eye with circles symbolizing the eye. Worn at the ankles, these bracelets also protect against snake bites and dangerous thorns. Until the 19th century, these anklets were reserved for the nobility, then this style became democratized among women who could afford them.
