Chinese Republic Jade, Peking Glass Sterling Necklace

[ translate ]

An antique pale green jade button has been repurposed during the 1920’s to make a necklace with Peking glass beads and sterling silver mounts.

Twelve rectangular Peking glass etched beads has been strung with pale orange yellow thread and gold colored round beads to make a necklace. The beads are attached to a hanging pendant made up of an antique very pale jade flower button that has been fitted into a sterling silver mount with floral edge detail and a stamped design of a flower with foliage on the back. The antique jade blossom is so pale that it is almost white. A clasp slides into the sterling mount to allow the user to open the necklace to wear.

The words “Sterling” and “MADE IN CHINA” have been stamped on the back of the pendant. There is also a mark for the silversmith that looks like “W.H.C”. I can’t make out the first letter for certain and was unable to find the mark in any of my reference materials on Chinese silver.

MEASUREMENTS

The necklace is 16 ½” (41.9 cm) long
Each glass bead measures ¾” (1.9 cm) long x 3/8” (1.0 cm) wide.
The jade blossom measures 1 15/16” (4.9 cm) long x 1” (2.5 cm) wide.
Weighs 2.5 oz (70 g)

CONDITION

There is a very tiny chip on a petal of the jade flower. The glass beads are in good condition and have no breaks. There are a couple of black dots in the jade flower. The pendant appears to have once has a gold wash because gold is still visible in the background of the markings on the back. Much of the remaining wash has worn off.

A beautiful necklace made from an antique jade button that is still very stylish.
