Late 19th C. African Zulu Wooden Knobkerrie War Club

Africa, South Africa, Zulu tribe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden war club known as a knobkerrie (also knopkierie) with a drilled suspension or thread hole through the pommel end of the slender handle. The tapered shoulder gradually widens and is surmounted by a spherical, 'knob'-shaped beater head. The entire club features wonderful patina in rich caramel and red-brown hues. Size: 24" L x 3.4" W (61 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired October 2004; ex-Mike Harvey collection, Exeter, England, UK
