Mesa Verde Black and White Pottery Ladle

Native American, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), found at Bug Point, eastern Utah, ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A fascinating example of a ladle bowl in the black-on-white pottery tradition with a deep bowl and thick, columnar handle. The interior of the bowl and handle are well polished, slipped, and have grey-white surfaces with black decoration of lines, dots, and stepped forms that resemble the entrances to sacred kivas and the dramatic southwestern landscape. This item was made for heating and serving food, and would have ultimately been deposited with a deceased member of the community or left in an abandoned domestic space. Size: 10.1" W (25.7 cm)

Condition Report: Handle is repaired near the bowl and its tip has been restored. The bowl has a few chips from the rim. Nice preservation of pigment on lower part of handle and in bowl with light deposits.
