Greek Apulian Lekanis w/ Ladies of Fashion & Palmettes

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery lekanis with a similarly-shaped lid and lower body which create an elegant symmetrical presentation. The wide body has a protruding foot, a pair of applied horizontal loop handles, and a delineated lip. The lid boasts a projecting knob handle decorated with a lovely ray pattern in the tondo, and the top is adorned with a pair of red-figure ladies of fashion with kekryphalos hairstyles and serene visages alternating with stylized palmettes - and a band of wave motifs adorns the profile edge. Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired in the 1990s from a US-based dealer

Condition Report: Expected surface wear with scuffs/scratches and slight losses to fugitive pigment, though much remains. Minute nicks and scuffs to the base. Black glaze on the lower section of the vessel has developed a marvelous silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence. Areas of encrustation and weathering film as shown. Nice root marks, especially visible on interior or lid.
