Roman Glass Sprinkler Flask w/ Ribs & Feet

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $250**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A lovely free-blown glass sprinkler flask of a semi-translucent, pale yellow-green glass. The globular body boasts 6 pinched ribs along the exterior, a slightly indented shoulder, a tubular neck with an integral constricted pour hole, and a flared rim with an in-folded lip, all atop a series of applied nubbin-shaped feet. Brilliant layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence imbue this vessel with a burst of color that is pleasing to the eye. Sprinkler flasks were intended to store precious scented oils without rapidly evaporating, and the constricted neck enables the conservative dispensing of its contents. Size: 3.5" W x 4.75" H (8.9 cm x 12.1 cm).

For a stylistically-similar example, please see "Solid Liquid: Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic Glass." Fortuna Fine Arts, Ltd., New York, 1999, p. 106, fig. 193.

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from Goldberg Auctions, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1968

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
