Hasli 24K Gold Necklace - Diamonds, Rubies, & Pearls
Central Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A choker style Hasli high karat gold (98% gold ~ 24K) wrapped necklace with a decorative section comprised of seven diamond-shaped bezels - three containing beautiful diamonds and four containing natural ruby cabochons - with nine danglers - each one comprised of ~ 6 or more seed pearls and ~ 8 or more sky blue glass bead clusters. The term "hasli" is derived from hansuli meaning "collar bone" - and this example, given its relatively petite scale - was created for an infant or child. Last year, an exhibtion entitled, "Enduring Splendor: Jewelry of India's Thar Desert" at the Fowler Museum at UCLA provided a marvelous overview of the 5,000 year history if Indian jewelry creation. The exhibition and catalogue demonstrated how jewels played a critical role in samskaras (rite-of-passage rituals) throughout the lifespan such as marriage, pregnancy, and the birth of a child. Size: choker is 4.125" in diameter (10.5 cm) plus clusters measure ~ .375" L (1 cm); total weight: 31.8 grams
Provenance: private House of Indus collection
