Italian translation of first five volumes of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the third volume, published in 1731, is a rare printing of the important map of the Gulf of California by Eusebio Francisco Kino, establishing that California was a peninsula, not an island. The map is titled "Un Passaggio per Terra a California Soperto dal P. Eusebio Francesco Kino Giesuita fra l'i Anni 1698 et 1701." It measures 22x19.3 cm plus margins, and is skillfully engraved and printed on fine paper.
Condition Report: Soiling and wear to wrappers, top half of spine strip of Vol. III perished; some internal aging and darkening, overall very good, in rare original state, the Kino map and most of the other plates and paps in fine condition. Set in two custom folding cloth boxes.
