Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen The Younger

[ translate ]

(Flemish, 1664?1730)Still Life of Flowers with a Garden Urn, circa early 1690s, unsigned, oil on canvas, 64 x 48 in. (162.56 x 121.92 cm.); gilt wood and composition frame, 69-1/2 x 54 in.Note: Brunk Auctions would like to thank Dr. Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the painting on the basis of photographs. He shares his opinion that this is the pendant for a signed work listed on the RKD database. He goes on to state that "The composition is similar, but the execution of the sculpted vase is better in your painting, perhaps by Peter Ykens (1648-1695/96), with whom Verbruggen collaborated more often, in which case it originated between 1679 and 1696. A date in the first half of the 1690s would appear to fit for Verbruggen?s flowers."Provenance: Ex-Collection of Mrs. Daniel Baker, Jr., Maryland; Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Proceeds to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund
Condition Report: lined with paste and linen, restretched on late 19th/early 20th century stretcher, crackle, retouch, abrasions; frame with wear and some losses
