PAUL-JEAN FLANDRIN
(Lyon 1811-1902 Paris)
Collection of 20 pen and ink caricature drawings.

Each pen and brown ink on paper, circa 1840s-50s. Many signed and annotated in ink, recto.

Flandrin was the younger brother of the artists Auguste Flandrin and Hippolyte Flandrin. He studied in Paris and joined the studio of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, twice competing unsuccessfully for the Prix de Rome. Nevertheless, he managed to get to Rome at his own expense, joining his brother Hippolyte, who had already won the prize. Together they spent four years in Rome, during which Paul specialized in landscape painting, making studies after nature which he later worked up into history paintings for the Paris salons. He also regularly collaborated with his brother, providing the landscape backgrounds for the latter's works.

Property from the Eric Carlson Irrevocable Trust.
