Impressive large wood panel showing Christ as Saviour, delivering a blessing gesture with his right hand, holding the orb in his left hand. Most of the original polychromy still present on the plaster layer. Fine details in the hair, beard and folds of his garment. Swabian school, 16th century. Swabia (south-west of present-day Germany) is a historic region between the Black Forest and Bavaria. Swabian sculptures were essentially religious works and were destined to furnish churches and monasteries. The artists are known for their advanced skill in the wood-carving process and knowledge of polychromy. Condition: fair condition, some wear and dry cracks consistent with the age of this piece.
