Antique Thai Stone Dvaravati Buddha
Ca. 18th century Dvaravati style Thai Buddha. Classic dvaravati style with symmetrical hair curls, and a tapering ushnisha. His simply robes clearly define the form beneath. A single raised line bridges the eyebrows and nose. Lightly incised eyelids and full lips add to figure’s essential beauty. The Buddha stands in a symmetrical posture. Given the symmetry of the figure and even the fall of the robes, the missing hands were, in all probability, originally raised in the gesture of exposition (vitarka mudra), a favoured convention in early Dvaravati Buddha imagery.
