Mask (1) - Wood - Fang - Gabon
Former EKEKET mask of Fang. This type of mask is very old (like the NGIL mask) dancing in funeral or judicial rituals, exclusively reserved for chiefs, but whose role has evolved under the pressure of the colonizers, to become a simple mask of entertainment. It represents the caricature of a legendary character, with warts on its nose and chin. Essential remark: the choice of colors and their arrangement varied according to its punctual use, but the mask always remained the medium obliged between the living and the ancestors. So regularly, the same mask changed color according to well-defined rules(funerals of the chief's mother, his wife, a child, a notable, judicial function . . .) . See the pictures attached to other EKEKET masks in different colors. Very beautiful erosive patina of seniority. Provenance : Private Belgian collection. Certification on request. Shipping : Insured, tracked and traced. Pick up possible at our gallery in Brussels (Sablon)
