20th C. Ifugao Monkey Skull, Boar Tusk, Textile Hat
Southeast Asia, northern Philippines, Ifugao province, ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinating headdress, made from a thick woven textile band decorated with a seated wooden anthropomorphic figure, a string of shell beads, a sharply curved boar tusk, grey hornbill feathers, and, most dramatically, a monkey skull perched at its highest point, held in place by thin rattan bands on a crossed woven rattan frame. This type of headdress is worn by clan leaders as part of ceremonies to honor the ancestors. The monkey is considered a comic figure, while the hornbill is thought of as the messenger of the gods.
