An abbreviated French translation of Las Casas's nine tracts on Spanish atrocities in the New World. Although some bibliographers refer to a 1692 edition, the present lot seems to be the second edition of a text first published in 1697. The volume’s second text gives an account of the buccaneering voyages (see lot 72) of Etienne de Montauban, a famed French pirate operating in the Caribbean and along the West African coast. Cf. Brunet I, 1613; Palau 46965; Sabin 11274.
3 parts in one volume, 12mo (155 x 95mm). Engraved frontispiece, title printed in red and black (a few light spots). Contemporary vellum, titled in manuscript on spine (faintly darkened, small stains). Provenance: remains of printed note on pastedown.
