(4to) 26.5x18 cm (10¼x7") period tree calf, rebacked with new calf spine, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers. First Edition.

Text engravings include views, animals (including the famous first flying fish and dodo), inhabitants and their costumes, maps of Madagascar and the Caucasus. Herbert's chief work, this volume is considered one of the best records of 17th-century travel. Sir Thomas Herbert, 1st Baronet, was an English traveller, historian and a gentleman of the bedchamber of King Charles I while Charles was in the custody of Parliament.
Condition Report: General light wear and some small areas of wormholing to calf; hinges reinforced with cloth tape, scattered light foxing, fingersoiling to margins, occasional dampstaining, minor chips and tears with sometime a bit of loss; very good.
