Karl XI (1655-1697) from the Wittelsbach house was the son of King Karl Gustav X of Sweden and his wife Hedwig of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. He became King of Sweden when he was only five years old upon his father's death in 1660. This imposing three-quarter length portrait shows the monarch in an ornamental breastplate and red cloak with a marshal's baton and the Order of the Garter which he received in 1668.
