Arne Jacobsen (b. Copenhagen 1902, d. s.p. 1971)

“The Drop” (Dråben). Very rare, all original chair with browned metal legs. Seat and back upholstered with original patinated brown leather. Designed 1958. This example manufactured approx. 1958 by Fritz Hansen.

The present chair is all original and appears as it was used in the Snack Bar at the SAS Royal Hotel. Most “Drop” chairs to be offered in sales recent years have been chairs that were originally used in the hotel rooms and thus upholstered with wool, but later have been “re-done” with brown leather and the chromed legs have been altered to resemble copper as the ones made for the Snack Bar.

“The Drop” chair was designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, as part of the special decoration that Arne Jacobsen designed for this, his most famous, complete project. “The Drop” chair was upholstered with wool fabric for the hotel rooms, while a version upholstered with leather was made in 40 pieces for use in the hotel's Snack Bar.

Literature: Carsten Thau & Kjeld Vindum, “Arne Jacobsen”, 1988, ill. and referred pp. 436, 439 and 441.
