A magnificent Indian dagger in Mughal style, mid-20th century

The slightly curved, single-edged blade of forge-welded Damascus steel with a double-edged point. A stylised lotus blossom chased at the base of the fullers on each side. Engraved silver quillons, lavishly set with different precious and semi-precious stones. The grip carved in one piece from an elephant's tusk, the eyes of the tiger's head pommel set with turquoises. Appliqués of engraved silver on the side, lavishly embellished with gemstones. The wooden scabbard with a textile cover. Silver chape and locket also lavishly set with stones. Length 45 cm. CITES documents available, including clearance for trading.

Provenance: By all accounts, the dagger was originally presented to a German diplomat.
