A Westerwald salt glazed stoneware apothecary jar
Narrow cylindrical vessel with moulded base and similar rim. Painted on one side with the motto "1590 ALT DAS GOT WALT IE" in a scrollwork surround. Cracks, chips to the rim, an old filled repair to the base at the front. H 16.5 cm.
Jan Emens Mennicken, 1590.
Jan Emens Mennicken (around 1540 - around 1594), who was born in Raeren, moved to the Westerwald after 1587, where he continued to produce his vessels with a different, grey clay, but with the same appliques.
