A Dutch silver medal
A Dutch silver medal
Oval, single-sided medal with an extremely finely engraved depiction of a young girl with a bowl of fruit, after a portrait in the Berlin Gemäldegalerie attributed to Titian and dated 1555.
Older interpretations assumed that the sitter was Lavinia, the artist's daughter, which is why the frame is inscribed "TIZIAN LAVINIA" in the centre at the bottom. H with bail 5.6; W 4.7 cm, weight 18 g.
Unmarked, Netherlands, second half 17th C.
Provenance
Dutch private collection.
