Jan Vermeulen - Vanitas still life
Jan Vermeulen
Vanitas still life
Oil on panel. 41,5 x 37,5 cm.
Jan Vermeulen, a native of Haarlem, is a painter of vanitas still lifes from the group around Pieter Potter, Pieter van Steenwyck and the early Jan Davidsz de Heem.
On a tabletop are writings, a globe, musical instruments, a crown richly adorned with stones and weapons, all densely packed against a grey-greenish background. The attribution to Vermeulen is convincingly supported by a comparison with a still life by his hand in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, in which most of the motifs correspond to those in this painting.
Provenance
Kunstzaal Oudt Holland, The Hague (as E. Collier). - Since 1952 Dutch private collection.
